Influences on the Restaged Tour -> 2004 Film

One of the more interesting things about the restaged tour is how it
took inspiration from other major works or adaptations on ALW’s show.
Here are some (but not all) possible ways the 2004 film of The Phantom of the Opera
may have influenced the restaged tour:

  1. Journey into the past: Both the 2004 film and the restaged tour show the opera house being cleared of its dust and reverting to its former, glorious self. Of particular note in the tour is a display stand of the Hannibal Princess costume being replaced with an actual Hannibal Princess actress.
  2. Carlotta’s costume change: Both the 2004 film and the restaged tour feature Carlotta changing from her everyday clothing into her costume for Il Muto. (Note: this was also done in the RAH production, but both were probably influenced by the scene in the film).
  3. Red Death: Both the film and the tour feature less of a Red “Death” and more of a Red “Napoleon”.
  4. Madame Giry’s Tale: Both the 2004 film and the restaged tour show the Phantom during his time as an attraction in traveling fair. The film uses a flashback while the tour uses shadows on the wall. (Note: The 2004 flashback sequence may in turn have been inspired by Frederick Forsyth’s The Phantom of Manhattan, which was also one of the sources for Love Never Dies.)
  5. Fight in the graveyard: Both the 2004 film and the restaged tour have Raoul and the Phantom briefly fight with each other. The film uses a sword-fight, the tour a fist-fight.
